Just When You Think You Can Settle Down: Military Relocation Assistance

Posted on

When you are in the military, you accept the fact that you do not get to stay anywhere for too long. That applies both in the field on a tour of duty as well as at home in the states. It can get unnerving, though, when you think you finally get to stay somewhere, and then after a few years you are uprooted again. The financial challenges of military relocation can be difficult, so here are some tips to help.

Faster Sales with Real Estate Agents' Help

The problem with being relocated by the military is that you never have enough time to sell your house and be present for the showing and sale thereof. Real estate agencies and brokers have taken notice of this issue long ago. They have been buying up properties from military families for years.

If you do not sell it outright to the real estate agency or broker, you can sign a "vacate and sell" notice. This allows you to leave the property behind and let your agent or broker stand in for you at the sale. Either way, the matter of selling your home is worry-free.

Subletting for Short-Term Relocations

If you are currently renting, and you know the military is only going to relocate you back again in a few months to a year, you can sublet the place. A real estate agent can help with this too. He or she finds a respectable and responsible person, or persons, to rent your apartment while you pack up to go. In many cases, you may even meet the person before you leave, which may reduce some of the anxiety you feel about leaving.

Finding Your New Home

If you need help finding an apartment or house in the city to which you are being relocated, ask the real estate agent. He or she has a vast database of properties and locations that will help you find living quarters off-base in the new city. You can even call ahead and ask to see videos or pictures of it, and then you can sign a contract via fax to rent or to buy the place.

Moving Assistance

If you cannot get your moving expenses paid for by the military (and there is a program for that), talk to the moving companies. Most of them offer special discounts to military personnel and their immediate families. Some moving companies even offer services for free as a way to thank you for your service, but you do have to call and ask around.
